CAE and the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) have signed an MOU to start a joint venture to develop a multi-purpose training centre (MPTC) for aircraft in the region.
The centre will be linked to the national modelling and simulation centre that the two organisations have already set up in Brunei, and sees a 'sizeable investment' of $80 million, Marc Parent, President and CEO of CAE told media at the Singapore Airshow on 15 February.
The signing of the MOU was consented to by Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and the first phase will see the development of the region's largest helicopter simulator training facility, Dato Ali Apong, Deputy Minister at the Brunei Prime Minister's Office and chairman of the BEDB said at the signing.
'It reflects CAE's confidence in Brunei as a place for investment,' Apong continued.
It will offer training to both military and civil operators, including the oil and gas sector and security and public safety.
'It [the investment] will increase safety and efficiency in these three areas,' Parent said at the signing. 'This marks the beginning of what we know will be a long-term strategic partnership with Brunei.'
'The facility, which will be located in Rimba, is expected to create about 35 direct jobs for locals and will catalyse the development of Brunei Darussalam as a hub for high-tech investments,' a statement from BEDB read.
'The MPTC also aims to leverage on Brunei's key strengths and expertise as a well-established oil and gas producer,' and aims to position Brunei as a 'leading helicopter training hub' in the South East Asian market.
Brunei purchased 12 S70i Black Hawk helicopters from Sikorsky in December with the option for ten more, and although CAE could not comment on what platforms will initially be trained on at the centre, it is believed that the first contract will be training S-92 pilots within the oil and gas sector.
The lead up to the signing of this MOU has been going on for 'over a year' Parent confirmed, and it is now down to the BEDB and Brunei government to take it further, although Parent did say that he expects this to happen 'over a short time line'.
