Thanks to everyone for a lively start to the first week. 21K students have been active in the course so far. This is the first time the course is being taught online, and we appreciate your participation and helpful feedback as we iron out some kinks. We are grateful to those of you who fearlessly watched lectures and submitted assignments on the very first day, and are especially grateful to those who are helping others through the forums.

Guided by the forum discussions, we have compiled some troubleshooting info for NetLogo and Gephi. We encourage you to help make the wiki our go-to spot for useful info by contributing to it. Don't fret about Gephi and NetLogo. If you can get Pajek, UCINet, or similar to work, you will be able to do "Gephi" assignments. The forum and wiki would be great places to help one another translate between these different software packages. NetLogo runs very reliably as a standalone application, so there's no worry about being able to run/use NetLogo. NetLogo's creators have also given us updated browser applet software, so e.g. the community visualization demo should be usable with more browser setups (as long as you enable Java!).

Here are some of the most common issues:
1) Video playback is flaky: make sure you are using the most up-to-date browser. If all else fails, download the video.
2) Can't open pptx slides: under 'video lectures' we have now made PDF versions available.
3) NetLogo app won't load, Gephi won't install (see above)
4) Where is dining.gephi, HW1 template
5) formatting HW1 for auto-grader (use Notepad++ or similar on Windows to keep the text clean, upload the .gml from GetNet directly, also see forum for additional tips)
6) HTML toggle obscures video in Lecture 1A (we have removed the toggle)

What you can do to help:
* keep reporting issues in the forums
* search the forum before you post (is there already a thread with your question?) to reduce clutter
* vote up interesting questions and helpful answers, mark questions as resolved if they are
* share solutions to frustrations you've encountered
* add information to the wiki

3.091x: Introduction to Solid State Chemistry
Overview

About this course

3.091x is a first-year course where chemical principles are explained by examination of the properties of materials. The electronic structure and chemical bonding of materials is related to applications and engineering systems throughout the course. The on-campus version of the course has been taught for over thirty five years and is one of the largest classes at MIT. The class will cover the relationship between electronic structure, chemical bonding, and atomic order, and characterization of atomic arrangements in crystalline and amorphous solids: metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers (including proteins). There will be topical coverage of organic chemistry, solution chemistry, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, biochemistry, chemical kinetics, diffusion, and phase diagrams. Examples will be drawn from industrial practice (including the environmental impact of chemical processes), from energy generation and storage (e.g. batteries and fuel cells), and from emerging technologies (e.g. photonic and biomedical devices).
Students will complete weekly concept questions, watch videos and work on interspersed exercises, as well as submit weekly homework. Homework assignments may be submitted multiple times until the deadline. Those who earn a passing grade will get an honor code certificate from MITx.

Prerequisites

Some familiarity with high school chemistry is useful but not required.

Michael Cima

Michael Cima is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has an appointment at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He earned a B.S. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, both from the University of California at Berkeley. He was elected a Fellow of the American Ceramics Society in 1997 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2011. Prof. Cima's research concerns advanced technology for medical devices that are used for drug delivery and diagnostics, high-throughput development methods for formulations of materials and pharmaceutical formulations. Prof. Cima is an author of thirty seven US patents, a co-inventor of MIT’s three dimensional printing process, and a co-founder of four startup companies.

Do I need to buy a textbook?

No, a free online version of Chemistry: Principles, Patterns, and Applications, First Edition by Bruce Averill and Patricia Eldredge will be available, though you can purchase a printed version (published by FlatWorld Knowledge) if you’d like.

Do I need a calculator?

Any simple calculator will suffice, such as the one provided in the online courseware.

Do I need any other materials?

We will provide both a periodic table and a table of constants.

Will certificates be awarded?

Yes. Online learners who achieve a passing grade in a course can earn a certificate of mastery. These certificates will indicate you have successfully completed the course, but will not include a specific grade. Certificates will be issued by edX under the name of either HarvardX, MITx or BerkeleyX, designating the institution from which the course originated. For the courses in Fall 2012, honor code certificates will be free.

We look forward to discussing with you the poems of week 3 (first week of chapter 2 on the rise of modernism). If you are near or in Philadelphia, we welcome you to join us at the Kelly Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk, for the session. ongoing responses to the first essays Of all the essays submitted, there are now just 12 that have not been peer-evaluated and thus do not appear in the discussion forums. (We are looking into these.) Amazingly, all the other essays have been evaluated and everyone should have received at least two responses. We are heartened by the collaborative response by the ModPo community to the goal of giving everyone several responses to their essays. Thank you! Dear FIX,

We hope you're enjoying the course material for Learn to Program: The Fundamentals so far! If you haven't started yet, it's not too late: the first exercise isn't due until the end of the weekend. Here are some notes that you should read carefully. Assignment 1 will be posted in the next couple of days, and we'll email another announcement when that happens. Assignment 1 will have you make use of all the lecture material in weeks 1 and 2, so when it's posted please don't get scared off! The Resources link in the navigation bar has a link to the Python Visualizer, which we will start to use in week 2. The visualizer shows you a picture of computer memory so you can see how Python manages information in a running program. We will have a couple of videos demonstrating its use. The Course Logistics link in the navigation bar contains a list of the coursework and how much each part is worth. In order to earn a certificate, you need to earn at least 70% on the course material. Exercise 1 can be submitted a lot of times — 100, to be exact. The rest of the exercises will be restricted to 3 attempts only. Each piece of work has a soft deadline and a hard deadline. The soft deadline is the regular due date, and the hard deadline is 1 week later. If you submit a piece of work after the soft deadline, there is a 50% penalty. You can't submit after the hard deadline. We would like to thank everyone who has given constructive feedback on the discussion forums! We're pretty new to this MOOC stuff, and it's been useful for us to interact with people who have been letting us know what we can improve.

Conciertos, talleres, exposiciones, y recitales poéticos, hacen parte de la amplia programación que ofrecerán este viernes la Secretaría de Cultura y Turismo de Cali, y ocho entidades que trabajan por la cultura. Estas actividades se desarrollan dentro del programa ‘Viernes de Centro Histórico’, que se realiza el último viernes de cada mes en este sector de la ciudad.

Jazz Gamblers y Ra La Culebra serán los grupos invitados al concierto que se ofrecerá en la plazoleta principal del Centro Cultural de Cali, a partir de las 6:30 de la tarde. Mientras tanto, en el auditorio principal se realizará la clausura del XII Festival Internacional de Poesía con un recital poético internacional.

La programación se iniciará a partir de las 8:00 de la mañana y se extenderá hasta la 8.00 de la noche en jornada continúa en el Museo Arqueológico La Merced, Industrias Culturales de Cali, la Cámara de Comercio de Cali, Sociedad de Mejoras Públicas, el Centro Cultural de Cali, el Centro Cultural Comfandi, Proartes, Centro Colombo Italiano y en el Museo de Arte Religioso y Colonial La Merced.

El alcalde de Cali, Rodrigo Guerrero Velasco, convoca a los medios de comunicación a una rueda de prensa que ofrecerá este jueves 27 de septiembre, en el salón Cañaveral del Hotel Intercontinental, al término del nuevo consejo de seguridad. Se realizará a las 9:30 a.m.

En ese mismo salón, también se desarrollará una rueda de prensa con expertos que participarán en el Congreso Mundial de Promoción al Consumo de Frutas y Hortalizas, que se llevará a cabo en el mismo Hotel Intercontinental, este jueves y viernes.

ESTE JUEVES 27 DE SEPTIEMBRE EN CALI INGENIEROS HOLANDESES PRESENTAN INFORME DE INSPECCIÓN AL DIQUE DE AGUA BLANCA

 

El taller dictado por expertos holandeses y colombianos, presentará a las autoridades civiles, ambientales, gremiales y académicas relacionadas con el jarillón del río Cauca, un resumen sobre sus inspecciones al dique que protege a Cali de inundaciones. B- Cali, 27 de septiembre de 2012 Con la participación de la directora del Fondo de Adaptación, el Alcalde de Cali, la Embajada de Holanda, el Director General de la CVC, los rectores de las Universidades Nacional y del Valle, los Gerentes de las Empresas de Servicios Públicos y representantes del Ministerio de Ambiente, la Unidad Nacional del Riesgo, el OSSO, Procaña y Asocaña, el próximo jueves 27 de septiembre se realizará en Cali en taller ‘Manejo de Diques en Colombia’. Este taller profundizará en los problemas y posibles soluciones para el maneo de diques en el país a la luz del modelo holandés para el cuidado y manejo de estas estructuras y con el caso del jarillón de Aguablanca. “En mi país un dique es casi que un santuario que necesita protección y cuenta con zonas de protección y protocolos para su mantenimiento” señaló el ingeniero holandés Hans Leenen, al comparar la situación de invasiones encontradas sobre el jarillón del río Cauca en Cali. Los resultados obtenidos y las situaciones identificadas durante las visitas de inspección de la delegación colombo-holandesa de expertos al jarillón del río Cauca, serán presentados por representantes del organismo holandés de control de diques (Dutch Waterboard). Este taller hace parte del estudio denominado “Diagnosis of and recommendations for the Aguablanca Dike along the Cauca river, city of Santiago de Cali, Colombia” (Diagnóstico y recomendaciones para el dique de Aguablanca sobre el río Cauca) que hace parte del proyecto Plan jarillón Aguablanca y obras complementarias en el municipio de Cali, adelantado por el Fondo de Adaptación y la Embajada de Holanda. Por parte de la CVC se hará una presentación sobre los puntos relevantes y problemas encontrados en el manejo de agua y diques a cargo del ingeniero Ómar Chaves. El taller se realizará en el Auditorio Bernardo Garcés Córdoba de la CVC de 10:00 am a 4:00 pm.

 

Este jueves, expertos internacionales promoverán el consumo de frutas y hortalizas

Una de cada dos personas en Colombia tiene exceso de peso, lo cual determina una clara tendencia hacia la obesidad en el país. La cifra es parte del panorama que será presentado en el lanzamiento del VIII Congreso Mundial de Promoción al Consumo de Frutas y Hortalizas que se efectuará en Cali el 27 y el 28 de septiembre con la asistencia de expertos de más de 25 países. Se realizará en el Hotel Intercontinental.

A las 9:00 de la mañana de este jueves, se convoca a los medios de comunicación a una rueda de prensa con participantes nacionales e internacionales.

Fernando Ramírez, director encargado de Protección y Prevención del Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social, dijo que es necesaria una movilización social alrededor de la alimentación no saludable en el país, porque se está incrementando la cifra de personas afectadas por enfermedades no transmisibles.

En Colombia, el consumo de frutas y verduras promedia los 190 gramos, muy por debajo de los 400 gramos recomendados por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Una de cada dos personas es sedentaria; 8 de cada 10 personas ha consumido alcohol, y uno de cada 3 jóvenes fuma. Según Ramírez, hay una infantilización y feminización del cigarrillo. La edad de iniciación en el tabaco es de 12 años en niños y niñas. Pero hay menores que han probado su primer cigarrillo a los 6 o 7 años, situación que preocupa en extremo a las autoridades.

Agregó que por la mala calidad en la alimentación, y el poco acceso a verduras y frutas, las enfermedades crónicas en Colombia, “le pegan a los pobres”.

Las razones por las que éstas enfermedades (diabetes, enfermedades cardiovasculares, enfermedades pulmonares y cáncer) afectan en mayor proporción a los pobres están relacionadas con menores accesos a educación y por tanto a información, menor ingesta de alimentos saludables y nutritivos por la escaza capacidad adquisitiva, necesidades básicas insatisfechas que redundan en mayores problemas de calidad e inocuidad y por supuesto mayores dificultades en el acceso a servicios de salud de calidad.

En el país, 196 mil personas mueren al año por enfermedades cardiovasculares, por problemas pulmonares y por diabetes. Con la sana alimentación, se podría evitar el 80% de las enfermedades cardiovasculares y el 30% de enfermedades de cáncer.

Por su parte, Denis Latimer, Oficial Nacional encargado de programas de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura FAO (por su siglas en inglés, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), dijo que hay una marcada tendencia mundial a la obesidad y lamentó que solo el 20% consume frutas y hortalizas.

Dora Aya, coordinadora del proyecto FAO– Minsalud, destacó por su parte que acciones como la promoción del consumo de frutas y verduras sean también una apuesta por la paz, porque por un lado, incentiva la producción con pequeños y medianos productores y por otro tiene que ver con la sana alimentación de todos los sectores de la población.

Explicó que uno de los objetivos del congreso de Cali es el establecimiento de acuerdos de cooperación técnico-científicos e identificar experiencias exitosas para promover el consumo. “Articular una sólida política alimentaria y nutricional, es una forma de contribuir a la paz”, añadió Aya.
En la zona rural colombiana, dijo, el 70% de los productores de frutas y verduras, lo hacen en pequeñas y medianas parcelas. Y consideró paradójico que el Valle sea el departamento de Colombia que más produce y menos consume este tipo de alimentos.

Entre tanto, Adriana Senior, presidente de la Corporación Colombia Internacional, destacó la vinculación de Colombia a la estrategia ‘Cinco al Día’, que hoy promueve el consumo de frutas y verduras en más de 40 países. En Estados Unidos, la promoción de este consumo lleva 100 años; 80 en Canadá y 60 en Italia. “En Colombia, solo llevamos cinco años, pero lo importante es empezar”, afirmó Senior.

También invitó a los alcaldes de todos los municipios del país a impulsar estas políticas de sana alimentación, especialmente con frutas y hortalizas, como política de desarrollo local.

Cali, epicentro del XII Festival Internacional de Poesía: algunos recitales, en Aguablanca y la ladera

Veinte poetas de la ciudad, de otros rincones del país y del exterior se encargarán de que las letras se apropien de Cali, ya se a partir de este miércoles 26 de septiembre, con el XII Festival Internacional de Poesía. El encuentro se extenderá hasta este viernes 28 de septiembre, con ocho recitales poéticos que se desarrollarán en el Centro Cultural de Cali y en las bibliotecas de la red pública comunitaria caleña. Algunas recitales se harán en la ladera y en el Distrito de Aguablanca.

La apertura se realizará con las nuevas figuras de la poesía caleña en un recital denominado ‘La mesa de los jóvenes’. Se llevará a cabo en el auditorio principal del Centro Cultural de Cali, a las 7:00 de la noche. Participan Jhonier Castaño Celis, Jhonny Díaz Ospina, Alejandra Lerma, Luz María Chavarro y Alexánder Campo Sandoval, ganador del concurso de poesía ‘Red de Bibliotecas Públicas de Cali’, en la categoría juvenil.

De igual manera, el auditorio del Centro Cultural de la ciudad acogerá este jueves y viernes a los asistentes de los recitales centrales. Se programaron entre las 7:00 y 8:00 de la noche.
